The President of Uzbekistan reviewed plans for the development of the fuel and energy sector for the medium and long term
According to the head of state's press service, the energy system is one of the most important factors in ensuring economic growth, investment activity, and the well-being of the population.
In recent years, the private sector and foreign investors have been widely attracted to the sector, and large-scale projects have been implemented to build new generation capacities, develop renewable energy sources, and modernize networks. As a result of the reforms, the total capacity of solar and wind power plants has exceeded 6.3 gigawatts. The number of hydroelectric power plants has exceeded 100, and their total capacity has approached 2.5 gigawatts. Thanks to the expansion of renewable energy sources, a significant amount of natural gas is saved annually.
By 2030, the country's economy is set to reach $300 billion, and the population is expected to exceed 41 million. In industry alone, electricity consumption is projected to increase from 38 billion kilowatt-hours to 53.5 billion kilowatt-hours by 2030. The development of electric vehicles and data centers also puts additional pressure on the system.
In this regard, the need to develop generation capacities ahead of demand, increase the capacity of electrical grids and form sufficient reserve capacities was noted.
